Disaster Relief
and Community Disaster Education
The Jackson Area
Chapter of the American Red Cross responds to disasters of every
size and scope, providing emergency relief to those affected
twenty four hours a day, seven days a week. This year we responded
to 158 residential fire disasters and helped 521 individuals with
emergency food, health services, new clothes, mental counseling,
shelter and comfort supplies. 365 teddy bears were provided to
children displaced by fire disasters. In addition to critical fire
response, the Jackson Area Chapter sheltered 1,075 Hurricane
Gustav victims transported from Louisiana for five days. 3,500
comfort kits were provided to the victims; 17,235 meals and 34,470
snacks were provided.
While disasters
are unpredictable, increased public awareness of disaster risks
and knowledge of actions to take will help reduce injury, loss of
life and loss of property. Being prepared can make your family and
community safer. The Jackson Area Chapter provided disaster
education presentations to 3,872 individuals and distributed
10,500 preparedness materials.
Health and
Safety Services

mission related Care Giving programs, Babysitters training, HIV
education, First Aid, CPR, AED training, Swimming and Lifeguarding

and healthier lives. This past year, 7,859 individuals learned
lifesaving skills through Health and Safety classes offered by the

International

The international
tracing program helps local families find relatives with whom they
have lost contact because of a natural disaster, war or internal
conflict. We also bring awareness of international programs that
avert illness and save lives. Measles presentation was provided
for 35 individuals.
Service To The
Armed Forces
The American Red
Cross provides communication between those in the Armed Forces and
their immediate families around the clock and around the world. We
have a worldwide network that reaches service members wherever
they are to communicate a birth, death or illness. This year we
provided emergency communication connections for 250 military
families. Another 2,253 National Guard personnel received
information packets and presentations before deployment. Provided
food and refreshments for 1,764 soldiers and their families during
two deployment events and 850 bottles of water was given out.
Provided childcare during briefings for 80 children and 350 teddy
bears to given out to children of deployed soldiers. Emergency
preparedness education was provided to 75 children attending the
Tennessee National guard Summer Youth Camp and scholarship funding
was provided to12 children to attend the camp.
Community
Services
Red Cross
Community Services reached 5,000 individuals through services and
presentations given through the local Jackson Area Chapter. These
services included Patient Services provided by Red Cross
volunteers at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital, Basic Aid
Training for youth, “What is Blood?” presentations, “Scrubby
Bear”, First Aid presentations for children and Pet First Aid
classes.
Volunteers
We rely on
volunteers of all ages and backgrounds to carry on our work.
Volunteers constitute 97 percent of our total workforce, serving
as members of the board, instructors teaching lifesaving skills,
disaster action team members, office administrators, event
organizers and more. Some 373 volunteers made the work of the
chapter possible. The Jackson Area Chapter provides services to
Madison, Gibson, Crockett, Haywood, Hardeman, Chester, Henderson,
Decatur, Carroll and Henry Counties. The American Red Cross
shelters, feeds and counsels victims of disasters; teaches
lifesaving skills; and supports military members and their
families. The American Red Cross is a charity, not a government
agency, and depends on volunteers and the generosity of the
American public to perform its humanitarian mission.
