DIS000095 (09/10) Disaster Services: An Overview:

Purpose: The purpose of this course is to provide information about ways individuals and organizations can help their community prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies and disasters. Participants also learn about volunteer opportunities at their local Red Cross Chapter. The recommended class size is a minimum of four and maximum of 20 participants.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to–

  1. Explain how disasters affect people and communities.
  2. Describe how the community, including the American Red Cross, works together in disaster preparedness and response.
  3. Describe the services the Red Cross provides to people affected by disaster and the principles that guide Red Cross workers in disaster relief situations.
  4. Identify resources for personal preparedness.
  5. Determine how to help their community prepare and respond to disasters.
  6. Identify next steps to becoming a volunteer.

Course Length: Module one is about 1 hour, 55 minutes in length (includes a 15-minute break). Module two is about 1 hour, 30 minutes in length. Both modules together are about 4 hours long. Modules one and two can be offered together or on different days. Attendance of the entire course (modules one and two) is required to earn a course certificate.                    

Prerequisites: There are no prerequisites for this course. "Disaster Services: An Overview" is a prerequisites for all other Disaster Courses.
